“Disruption” was originally installed in the AFO building my final semester (Spring 2022). I interject the space with printed texts to disrupt the school’s lack of institutional self-reflection and communication. I feel the history of VCUarts and future changes are rarely acknowledged or explained, so I attempted to learn more about them myself sourcing information from salary databases, social media, online articles, and more. The collecting and organizing of information mirrors the repetitive nature of our own actions and of the institution. The small acts, both in size and impact, exist only because they are able to “hide” without violating the safety and installation rules, a literal and metaphorical sweeping under the rug. When they are discovered these acts have the potential to disrupt nonetheless, on an individual and institutional level bringing into the conversation what often goes unsaid. Careful observation of a space invites discovery. The practice of research and of installing "acts” disrupts my relationship as an artist and student with the physical space and larger institution. The “acts” perform in my absence but require placement and discovery to realize their full potential.
This online "database" serves to centralize the information shared in each disruption. It's format allows for learning, un-learning, re-learning knowledge and sharing it with others. I invite you to share/add information with the access provided in the zine/through this form. Clicking on the text to the left will guide your discovery.
